WAESOL, the Washington state affiliate of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), is a professional, non-profit organization whose purposes are to:
Promote scholarship
Disseminate information related to ESOL
Strengthen instruction, teacher training, and research in the teaching of English to speakers of other languages
This powerful teaching strategy coaches students in recognizing main ideas in a passage and summarizing it gradually progressing from individual to pair work to larger groups. Students learn to use evidence from the text to defend their interpretation of the main ideas, which becomes more challenging (but exciting) as groups expand. Through experiencing this strategy as "students," WAESOL participants will explore ways to adapt the approach at all levels (from grade 4 through college/adult education).
