Welcome and Keynote: Say it Forward: Amplifying Unheard Voices with Oral History

Jessica Fagen is the Education Specialist & Program Coordinator at Voice of Witness, a nonprofit that uses oral history, education, and advocacy to amplify the voices of people impacted by injustice and advance human rights. In this session, Jessica will discuss the benefits of oral history as a pedagogical tool for teaching and learning English and the importance of inclusive, diverse personal narratives. She will introduce the Voice of Witness methodology for ethics-driven storytelling, providing guidance on how to create a culture of bravery and sharing with their classes, and resources to support students in collecting their own communities' stories. Educators will have the opportunity to explore multiple student projects, generating ideas around how oral history may work in their classroom.
